The good thing is that when you come to Go! Glass, we are often able to repair minor chips without replacing the entire windshield, saving you time and money. But how can you avoid these windshield chips and cracks from happening in the first place?

Leave Space

Regardless of the road conditions, it’s always important to leave ample space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Not only will this reduce the chance of an accident, it will decrease your chances of chipping or cracking your windshield. The most common cause of windshield damage is small rocks and pebbles kicked up by vehicles in front of you. By leaving plenty of space, it reduces the chance a rogue rock will hit your windshield.

Drive Carefully on Gravel Roads

The chances of getting a rock chip or crack on your windshield increase significantly when driving on an unpaved gravel road. When driving on gravel roads, we suggest driving slowly to help your vehicle maintain traction and reduce the opportunity for flying rocks. On these roads, it’s extra important to leave ample space between vehicles as stopping takes longer and can send rocks flying in the process.

Avoid Dump Trucks

Whether you’re on a highway or quiet road, avoid driving behind dump trucks or any other type of vehicle hauling dirt or debris. Even if the debris is covered with a tarp or cover, it is still possible for small pieces to be dislodged and flown from the truck. If you’re behind the vehicle when debris is dislodged, the chances of it making contact with your windshield are high.

Shelter Your Vehicle

If they’re calling for inclement weather, such as hail, try to find shelter for your vehicle. The best place for it to be is in a covered garage, whether it be a personal or public parking garage. If you don’t have access to one, you can purchase special blankets designed to protect your vehicle from weather damage. If you’re stuck, thick blankets such as comforters or packing blankets can be placed on the vehicle and secured with rope or tape for DIY protection.

By following these tips, your chances of cracking or chipping your windshield will be significantly reduced. Unfortunately, even the most careful drivers will still experience the occasional windshield damage. So, when it happens to you, give Go! Glass a call and have our team fix your windshield. We’ll have you back on the road in no time!

Chipped and cracked windshields are an unfortunate part of driving.
